TRANSPORT secretary Chris Grayling has championed the Conservative by-election candidate’s pledge to fight for better transport and road links on the eve of an announcement of improvements for the A595.
The Government Minister visited Trudy Harrison on Monday to see work that needs to be done along the A595 and said that there will be an announcement on work to improve the key road in the next few weeks.
Mr Grayling said: “I’m very well aware of the issues around the road and the need for improvements. I’m actually going to be announcing some improvements to the road in the next few weeks.”
Praising Trudy and her plan for Copeland, Mr Grayling added that if elected, he believed she would be a great local champion in Parliament, fighting for her community in Copeland.
He said: “The most important thing for the people of Copeland in electing a new MP is to have somebody they know will fight for them, but who also will be someone who will be able to work with the team running the country and helping to give this region much more influence than it has had in the past.
“I know Trudy will be a great champion across a whole range of issues and in fact has already starting talking about how she would like to see transport links improved.”
With the prospect of around 21,000 new jobs at Moorside, it is vital that the key link road between West Cumbria and Carlisle is upgraded, which is why Trudy invited Mr Grayling along to see for himself the problems commuters face on a daily basis.
Trudy Harrison said:
“The A595 has needing improvements for years. It is often backed-up with workers from Sellafield, while other motorists can often find themselves stuck behind farm workers on tractors for miles due to a lack of passing points.
“Hundreds of local people have backed my call for action on the A595 because our communities need better roads. I will make sure that we aren’t forgotten and ignored like we have been by Labour for years.
“As part of my six-point plan for our area, I will work with fellow Cumbrian MP John Stevenson and the Government to ensure the desperately needed improvements on the A595 are realised.”
