It was a community effort this week when Trudy Harrison MP, locally elected members and Parton residents came together for a communal litter pick.
Following Trudy's Saturday Chataway surgery, which was this month held in Parton Village Hall, Mrs Harrison led a clean up session inviting residents and members of the community to join her in a bid to combat some of the rubbish left in Copeland’s residential and communal areas.
More than 20 bags of rubbish were collected along Parton Main Street and the promenade.
Mrs Harrison, said: “The village was very tidy, thanks to a litter pick organised by Parton Youth Club earlier in the week, so we focused on the roadsides and all the way up to the top road.
“So much of the litter had obviously been thrown out of cars, often in tied up carrier bags, which had got caught on brambles and ended up strewn all over the countryside”. Copeland Borough Council were very helpful, providing all equipment and collecting the bags that afternoon for us.”
Last year, Mrs Harrison pledged to support the Copeland Pride of Place Campaign which works with residents, community groups, schools and partner organisations to raise awareness of the effects litter whilst helping to reduce incidences of littering, an offence punishable by a fine of up to £80.
The next community clean up will take place in Millom, between 1pm – 3pm following Saturday Chataway which will take place at Millom Pensioners Hall.
Mrs Harrison, added: “I welcome suggestions of areas to tackle in Millom, many hands will make light work so the more the merrier. Together we can make a tremendous difference in just a couple of hours.”
