The Conservative candidate for Copeland yesterday welcomed the Rt Hon Secretary of State, Liam Fox to Copeland to see the ongoing work at West Cumbria Mining.
Trudy and Dr Fox met with Colin Sharpe, supply chain manager at West Cumbria Mining to meet with staff and learn more about the project.
The plans would see coking coal being extracted off the coast of St Bees, with a processing plant at Kells.
Dr Fox, said: “Not only is this project great for West Cumbria, it’s good for the whole of the UK. It’s an encouraging example of what can happen in terms of regeneration to help the local economy and it’s at the top end of spec in terms of environmental protection and workers safety and is well integrated into the transport network and can help the UK economy with vital exports – all in all, exactly what the country needs and a is great example of what Britain can do, and what West Cumbria can do.”
As well as being a significant contributor to export trade, the project would bring with it more than 500 jobs to the area.
Mrs Harrison said: “It was great to welcome the Rt Hon Secretary of State for International Trade to Copeland to see the fantastic work at West Cumbria Mining - this amazing project celebrates all that is wonderful about West Cumbria, our innovation, our pioneering spirit and our ability to sell our goods and knowledge around the world.”
