COPELAND’S Conservative candidate visited a farmers’ market to find out how the popular event benefits local produce growers and traders.
Trudy Harrison said she believes such markets as the one in Egremont are a great way to promote produce and crafts, boost the local economy and raise funds for local good causes.
She said: “Events such as the popular Egremont farmers’ craft and fair trade market are a great way to showcase fantastic locally grown food and promote the work of craftspeople in the region.
“They also help boost our local economy, promote tourism and are just a great way to encourage residents to buy local.”
One of the local suppliers, Helen Shipton-Smith, who runs Helen’s Herbs, said she believes the area needs someone local to represent them in Parliament, someone who knows the area and the importance of community-run initiatives.
She said: “Egremont market helps promote and support lots of small food providers and craftspeople. Many of these stallholders have then go on to supply shops across the constituency. The market also helps raise much-needed money for charities such as the NSPCC.
“Trudy is local and I know is passionate about supporting us, which is something that the next MP for Copeland should be.”
